I'm currently putting together some plans for an immersion trip for counseling psychology graduate students. Although our program (located in milwaukee, WI) talks a lot about diversity and multi-cultural competence and sensitivity, it is my experience that opportunities to confront our own biases and prejudices are missing from our white, middle-class, academic bubble. So, the GSO (Graduate Student Organization) is trying to organize an immersion trip for our students. Unfortunately, most only speak English. Any ideas of organizations that might be willing to open their doors to between 5-10 English-speaking graduate students, seeking cultural immersion and self-reflection??? We'd probably be seeking a 5 week stay...we could reimburse (a little) for food, housing and accomodations.
