Hi, I'm a 19 year old wishful thinker from Arizona. I can't believe I came across this place. I haven't got the book yet, but I will as soon as possible. I was up to ordering as soon as I found out about Delaying the Real World but I'm going to be out of town. Now I have to wait even longer if I can't find it in a bookstore during my trip!

Now, the reason I'm posting this. I'm stuck, metaphorically. It's as if my parents don't want me to be my own woman, while at the same time they want to be empty nesters as soon as possible. Basically, I want to get out! I have all these dreams of living in a ton of different places and experiencing the different cultures. I just need a first stepping stone that will help me to cut the apron strings and not freak out my parents simultaneously.

So, does anyone have any good suggestions for opportunities that would fit my situation that are in the US as a starting point?

One way to get out of the "freaking out one's parents" mentality is to pay for one's own trips.

As for a location/activity - the book really has a lot of great ideas. I would start to do a little research - brainstorm where you'd like to go, and then figure out what you need to do to get there - even if you have to compromise a little. You'll make it, don't worry!

Thanks for the tips. I got the book and WOW. Laughing The ideas and references in there make me giddy. I found a few things that I can probably do within the next two years or so. I'm so happy!
