I think some liberals would argue that truly compassionate giving is "charitable donations" as the IRS defines the term, less that portion which goes solely to promote religion---i.e., the bulk of donations which go to churches. Churches do pass some funds to "needy" causes, but the bulk of their receipts support physical plant, clergy, and administration. If you want to support poverty relief and disease research, you would not give to a church. So, what do the author's data reveal about liberals versus conservatives if you strip out the religious component from donations ?????????

Put another way, a churchgoer is a consumer of religion in the particular form which satifies his personal religious needs. To the extent that he is "buying" religion, that is little different from his purchase of food to satisfy physical hunger.

I certainly agree with your post! Tithing to a church should not be equated with giving to a shelter for the homeless, for example. I work in a church office and a great percentage of the total giving is used to run the church itself. Maybe 10% of the church income is given to missions which in turn have to support their own operations with the remainder of their receipts—a remainder of the remainder—given to the actual care of the needy. Talk about your trickle down!

I think Mr. Brooks would like to think the giving of conservatives is greater than the giving of liberals so he forgets that all those religious conservatives give mostly to and through their religious institutions. I am well aware of the difference because my own income has always been "tithed" but across a broad spectrum of charities not just to my church. I did that for the very reason we are speaking of.

By the way, I call myself a "basicalist" because I am a believer in the basic tenets of the Christian faith. I would never call myself a fundamentalist because of what that term has come to mean! But because I believe in what Jesus taught and lived I am such a liberal politically that I haven't belonged to the Democratic Party for years. They have moved way too far to the right for my taste!

Less then 50% of those who attend church on a regular basis "tithe" to the church. The tithe is 10% of one's gross income. The data supports that even with backing out the tithe, religious folks are more giving. The book also clearly states they are more giving of their time and talents as well. Though you would probably say they were some how trying to pacify their conscience with busy work or something. Liberals will always point fingers and rely on unfounded assumptions to explain why they are right and everyone else is wrong. They have believed their own lie for so long that when presented with truth they can't or won't accept it. They argue with statistical data and even find a way to insult the ones doing the giving. If liberals were truly what they claimed to be, they would encourage whatever ideals or institutions that promote giving. And as for the young lady who replied and said she worked at a church, you should know that you are NOT tithing your income if the full 10% is not going to the church. A tithe is only to go to the "Store House" a.k.a the church. You may be donating your money but you are not tithing it.

You seem to have missed the quotation marks around the word "tithe". I know exactly what tithing is. I still work for a church. I still tithe. In addition, I still give to other causes and institutions as well. I don't call myself a liberal. Nor am I a conservative. I am a Christian: I am saved by grace, the blood of Jesus and (imperfectly) follow him—Wonderful Counselor, Prince of Peace and perfect radical in thought, word and deed. I am six months short of 70 years old. Never assume.

Reread my post with these facts in mind.

Thank you.
