I have recently read the book and I am very interested in what I saw. I would like to go to Costa Rica but all of the programs I have seen are very expensive. The only way I can see to go there and get paid(or not have to pay a fee) is to teach English. I would appreciate if anyone could point me in the right direction for any programs.... thanks!!!

I just have a few add-ons to my previous post. From what i have read, the best way to get a job is to go to the country and look. I would much rather have something secured before I left. Any ideas?

hi brenna!
i have lived and worked in costa rica so many times its a second home and i couldn't suggest a better place to travel.
it is true what you're heard, the best way to get work is just to go there. bring enough money for a couple months and you can probably stay for six. there are always jobs around, teaching english, waitressing, hotel work, tour guides, etc. you will find work easier if you speak spanish.
pura vida,

But a lot of TEFL programs charge a fee for you to go teach. You should get your certification first--maybe this summer?--before going over there. This will give you an edge over other candidates. You can find other jobs, such as wait staff, dishwashing, or even cooking if you have the right certification. If you don't mind agriculture, there is a program called WWOOF which is stationed internationally. You can volunteer to be a worker on an organic farm.

Check out Gap Year books for good references and ideas. That's what I'm trying to do... Good luck!
